I'm loving Rihanna's hook for Eminem's new song, 'The Monster.'

I'm friends with the monster that's under my bed. Get along with the voices inside of my head.

I'm going through a stage of really examining my monsters and taking the attitude of wonder versus judgement. By wondering why I behave the way I do in certain situations, I've identified triggers.

Become friends with your monsters. Ask yourself the following questions and see if anything comes up.

  1. When angry I...
  2. When money is involved I...
  3. When eating alone I...
  4. When writing I...
  5. When in trouble I...
  6. When joyful and triumphant I...
  7. When downcast and defeated I...
  8. When trying to make a good impression on others I...
  9. When informed of another's misfortune I...
  10. When informed of another's good fortune I...
  11. When losing in any sort of a game or sport I...
  12. When winning I...

Now that you've identified situations where your not being your best, brainstorm ideas on how to reduce the frequency in which it shows up. Then develop a game plan for when it does. Two of my favorite ways to make space between the trigger and your reaction are using your breath and making physical space by going to another room. Once you start to get a handle on it, the monster turns out to be a teacher. Next time you hear Rihanna singing the hook, "I get along with the monster," you will be rock'in it with her!

Ever grateful for wonder + growth,

Jody
